Speaking platforms:
- Goal-setting
- Inspiration and boosting self-confidence through the power of the mind. It has often been written about me that I “willed myself to win” Olympic gold in Sydney and my visualization techniques received a great deal of interest and coverage throughout my career.
Background in Swimming: I started swimming at age 9 at my parents request because they were interested in the general water safety skills of my brother and I. At my first tryout for the team I was so bad at swimming that I was placed in a group of kids that were four and five years old. Initially, due to my lack of natural talent in the water, I hated it and wanted to quit. But my parents urged me to continue and I decided that if I were going to have to be there anyway I needed to set goals so I would no longer be getting lapped by kids half my age. I set my first goal of being able to swim to the other side of the pool without stopping, and from there set a goal of not being last, and as I achieved each step I began to love swimming. Over the course of the next few years, I would set my goal of swimming in the Olympic Games.
Over the years I’ve faced obstacles ranging from physical injuries, to asthma, to my coach leaving out of the blue, to retirement, to a world of media telling me I was done, past my prime and that I could no longer compete at the highest level. That inspired me—the doubt other people had in my abilities and my wish to silence the critics—to achieve my dream of qualifying for a second Olympic team.
